These days, just about anything with value will have a stamped serial number. Firearms serial numbers and Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) are the most common type of altered or obliterated numbers seen in forensic laboratories. Not all firearms necessarily have a serial number, and therefore, because one is not found does not mean it was obliterated.
Also, due to the many stamp marks a firearm may have, it’s no surprise that a manufacturers’ part number can be confused for a serial number. Some firearms even have one or more hidden serial numbers whose location is not known to the general public.
FoCoSS Forensics can perform scientific examinations in this area or we can review cases involving this type of examination and the reported opinions based on the results.
